So we've wanted to install a laundry closet on our top floor pretty much since we've moved in. We had one area that seemed like a possible place we could install a stacking washer and dryer. The closet in the first picture was about 18 inches wide and we wondered if we tore it open if there might be more space. We'd need another 10 inches. So after some preliminary estimating, it seemed possible for there to be enough dead space.
So when Holly went out of town in October to see the Smith-Withey's and Holly A. in Michigan, I decided to tear out the drywall around the closet. Once the drywall was removed, I discovered the builders left a bunch of the leftover drywall in the dead space. Also once everything was torn open, I found out there was 30 by 33 inches of available space which was the perfect amount to install a full size front load washing machine.
Unfortunately, I didn't take enough progress pictures showing the plumbing and electrical work and framing. But here is the picture after it was all framed and drywalled with the new washer and dryer installed.
Here is the completed project. I was able to reuse the original bifold door for the closet that was installed where the washer/dryer is now.
There was enough unused space that I was even able to make another small closet next to the laundry. So far, I've only installed one shelf.
Here's another angle of the completed project.

Wow, great job! That looks amazing! How nice for you to have laundry right by your bedrooms. No more trips down 2 flights of stairs. You may need to go on more walks to make up the cardio!
